The Akabeko is a toy red cow, originating from a legend in the Aizu region of Japan, said to be able to ward off smallpox. The toy is constructed usually with papier-mache, and the head is separate from the body, connected with a piece of wire in such way that the head bobs when moved.
The daruma doll is a hollow, round, Japanese traditional doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism. They are typically red and depicting a bearded man (Dharma). It is seen as a talisman of good luck - when bought, the owner paints one eye black on making a wish, and paint the other when the wish has been granted.
The Shinonome household has a daruma doll that Hakase draw sunglasses on. She tried to hide it from Nano by hiding it under her labcoat but was soon discovered. As always, she blamed Sakamoto for enticing her to draw on it.
The doll is later seen on the lockers at the back of Class 1-Q, as with many other items.
The Daruma Otoshi is a game in which several wooden disks are stacked on top of each other, with a daruma doll on top. The player must knock off one disk at a time with a wooden mallet without toppling the stack.
Yukko is seen playing a game of daruma otoshi on her desk. The disk that she knocked off hit Mio's head, who throws it back at her. The stack doesn't topple.
